Setting and Checking your peep
Have you ever found yourself having to adjust so you can see through your peep? This can be caused by two possible things. We are going to address one of those issues now. That is the possibility that your peep is not set properly for you. We are going to address why proper adjustment is important and how to properly adjust your peep.
Why is it important for your peep to be set properly for you? Archery is about consistency. The more consistent you are the better you will shoot. We can use our peep to help us stay consistent. Every time you draw back and settle into your anchor point you should be able to see through your peep. If you can't after it is set properly then your form or anchor has changed and you need to correct it before you shoot. Now you can see that you can use your peep to check your anchor and form, but we need to get it set correctly first.
Setting your peep is fairly simple to do, but using a bow press is the safest way. I use three simple steps to help people set their peep, and to set my own as well. The first step is very easy to do. You need to stand with your bow as if you are getting ready to shoot, but don't draw yet that will come next. The next part of step one is to close your eyes. I know that sounds weird, but trust me and keep those eyes closed for now. Step two is to draw your bow and settle into your anchor while still keeping your eyes closed. Step three is the hardest one. While you are settled into a comfortable anchor open up your eyes or eye if you shoot with only one eye open. DO NOT ADJUST TO SEE THROUGH YOUR PEEP. You are only checking to see if your peep is in front of your eye. If it is then great, but if not then let down your bow and make small adjustments and repeat the three steps. See it's not that complicated, but there are a couple of quick safety concerns.
The most important is to NEVER DRAW YOUR BOW WITH OUT AN ARROW IN IT. When you do draw make sure to keep your bow pointed in a safe direction. The last quick safety note is to not slide your peep with tension on your string. Doing so can cut your string. The proper way to move your peep is to press your bow to take the tension off of the string.
We have covered how a properly set peep can help with your consistency and how to properly set your peep. If you do not feel comfortable doing this then the staff at SBD Archery would be very happy to help you. We are here to assist you and nothing makes us more happy than a happy customer.
